Shoehorns

A shoe horn is an investment both for yourself and for your shoes. It makes it much easier and comfortable to put on your shoes, at the same time as a shoehorn save your shoes for unnecessary strain, and minimise the risk for damage, which usually happens over time if you put on the shoes by just pressing in the foot.

We offer shoehorns in both cedar wood, wood and real horn. Cedar wood have the feature that it has its lovely scent and deters insects. Horn is a natural strong material which also minimise friction against the heel causing the foot to slip in easily. Choose the version that suits your purposes best.

How should I use a shoehorn in the best way?

Even if shoehorns are such a basic product found in most homes, not everyone uses them in the right way. To make it as easy as possible and protect your shoes as much as possible, insert your feet halfway into the shoe, then place the shoe horn against the back of the heel and hold it straight up, help a little with your other hand to lift the tongue/front part of the opening, slowly push your foot into the shoe, and then gently pull the shoehorn out straight upwards. If you find it difficult to bend down, use a longer shoe horn, and you may have to fiddle a bit more as you can't help with the tongue.

Why should I use a shoehorn?

Almost always using a shoe horn when putting on your shoes drastically reduces wear on the heel stiffener of the shoes, while making it much easier to get them on, especially if they are a bit tight. If you keep pressing your feet in without a shoehorn, you risk deforming the back counter, wear down the lining, and your shoes will inevitably break and need repair or, in the worst case, be discarded prematurely. Please note, it's not advisable to keep the shoes laced and to press in the foot with the help of a shoehorn, also this puts unnecessary stress on the shoes. Keep in mind that in many cases you put your shoes on and take them off thousands of times a year, doing it the right way will make a difference.

Why is it called a shoe horn?

It may go without saying when you think about it, but the reason is of course that the first shoe horns were made of horn. They took the horns from the cows on the farm, and worked out a shoe horn shape to make it easier to put on their footwear. A good way to make full use of ones resources. Texts first mention the tool in the 15th century, describing how British and French royalty used shoehorns, which historians say they picked up from farmers. Exactly who invented the shoehorn, however, is shrouded in mystery. At Skolyx you will among other things find shoehorns made of horn, following the same principle as the first shoehorns in the world.

What types of shoe horns are there?

There are many different types of shoehorns, from small short shoe horns to carry in your bag, to practical long shoehorns that make it easy even for older less mobile people to put on their shoes. At Skolyx you will find shoehorns in aromatically scented cedar wood, beautiful wooden shoehorns with high-gloss finish, and several varieties of shoehorns made from real horn. Our wooden shoehorns can also be personalised with an engraving, a great gift. In most cases, you want to be able to hang your shoehorn, so some kind of strap or hook is recommended.

How long should a shoehorn be?

It all depends on how you plan to use it. At Skolyx we have small horn shoehorns that are only 12 cm long, which are perfect to always have lying in your bag. We also have sturdy wooden shoehorns that are half a metre long, which make it extra easy to put on your shoes, especially for those who have difficulty bending down.
